Making Immigration Reform a Reality

For everyone concerned about immigration reform, the ongoing question is "Will it happen before the 2010 congressional campaigns begin?" While no one has the answer to that question, one thing is for sure. As people have conversations about immigration, what emerges is a new understanding that comprehensive immigration reform can happen.

The Arizona Interfaith Network organizations, working through Arizonans for Immigration Reform (http://www.arizonansforimmigrationreform.org/), are engaging leaders in their member congregations in academies on immigration reform. These sessions begin with an historical overview of immigration in the United States, followed by an analysis of the economic impact of immigrants and an opportunity for personal reflection, and ending with possible action steps. The evaluations at the end of these sessions have been very positive with expression of appreciation for the opportunity to study immigration reform in an open and reflective way.

Arizona Interfaith believes that this approach will build the public support needed for passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform in 2010. AIN organizations continue to schedule these academies, especially in Congressional Districts 1, 5, and 8 where moderate Democrats need support from their constituents.
